Why Does Your Vehicle Squeal When You Turn The Steering Wheel?

Blog

A power steering system is required in a vehicle to help make turning and all around handling easier. The power steering system consists of three components: the power steering pump, the belts, and the power steering fluid. A normal system is formed of the pump, controlled by the belt which is located on the front of the motor, the steering gear is secured by tie rods to connect to the steering gear to where the wheel is located. Lines or hoses attach the pump to the steering gear.

You know your vehicle better than anyone. You know when it is making "normal" noises and when it is making "abnormal" noises. It is safe to assume if you hear a noise you don't recognize that something is wrong with your vehicle. If your vehicle is squealing when you turn the steering wheel, for example, it is normal for you to want to know why and how you can fix it.

What Causes The Noise?

A power steering system is required in a vehicle to help make turning and all around handling easier. The power steering system consists of three components: the power steering pump, the belts, and the power steering fluid.

When you are driving, the pump shoots power steering fluid to a cylinder so you can turn the vehicle. Newer models have small electric motors to help drive. If the power steering system starts to go bad, steering can become increasingly difficult for the driver. It is not uncommon for your vehicle to squeal at you when the power steering fluid is low.

How Can You Check The Fluid?

You can check your fluid by locating a cylindrical reservoir close to the pump, it should be clearly labeled. If the system is clear you can visually check the fluids, if it is made of a denser plastic you can shine a light through to see the levels. You can also use the power steering dipstick.

To have an accurate assessment, run the vehicle for a short time and turn the wheel back and forth several times while the car is on. If the liquid is low, you may want to check for leaks. This can be checked by looking underneath the engine for a pink or red liquid.

The Squeal Could Be Coming From The Belts

There are also two belts that aid in turning. A serpentine belt and a belt that is specific for the power steering pump. If the belts are worn or loose they can also emit a squealing noise. A worn or loose belt can slip or shift when turning, which can affect the pressure the pump needs to work correctly. The belt can break causing the system to fail, making turning very hard.

If you've inspected the car and can't find the cause or if you aren't confident in your ability to determine the cause, then take our car in to be looked at by a professional. Contact a business, such as Checkered Flag Imports Inc, for more information.
