3 Tips For Proper Car Storage During Winter

Blog

If you have a sports car or other custom vehicle that wasn't designed to perform in the snow, you may want to keep the vehicle in storage during the winter months. Storing your vehicle properly will help you avoid the need for costly repairs when you are ready to begin driving the car as the weather warms up.

Here are three tips that you can use to ensure you are storing your vehicle properly for the coming winter months.

1. Have your vehicle detailed prior to storage.

One of the most important things that you can do when preparing your vehicle for storage is invest in a thorough cleaning for both the interior and exterior of the car. When you allow dirt or debris to sit on your car's exterior, these contaminants can begin to eat through the clear coat protecting your car's paint.

Crumbs or wrappers left inside of your vehicle can rot or attract rodents and insects while the car is in storage, so these items need to be removed as well. A proper cleaning will help to ensure your car's safety while it is in storage for the winter.

2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank.

Since your vehicle will likely have some gas left in the tank when it is time to place it into storage for the winter, you need to invest in a quality fuel stabilizer. Adding a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank prior to storage helps to protect your vehicle's gas tank and fuel lines from corrosion.

If you don't want to invest in costly repairs to your vehicle's fuel system when spring rolls around, be sure to use a fuel stabilizer when preparing the vehicle for winter storage.

3. Protect your vehicle against flat tires.

As your vehicle sits unused in winter storage, air can slowly leak out of its tires. Flat tires can lead to significant damage over time, so it's important that you take action to prevent flat tires during storage.

You can over inflate your tires to compensate for air loss, or you can place you vehicle on jack stands to help relieve pressure on the tires and suspension system while your vehicle is not in use.

Being able to properly store your vehicle is important if you don't plan to drive it during the cold winter months. Have your vehicle detailed, use a fuel stabilizer, and take action to prevent flat tires so that your vehicle won't need costly repairs to address damage caused by improper storage.
