Signs Your Brakes Need To Be Replaced

Blog

Your brakes stop your vehicle in an emergency, and just for those every day stops that you need to make while you drive. Those stops at every stop sign are possible because of the brakes on your vehicle. If your brakes are bad, you may not be able to make all of those stops in time and could end up in an accident or worse. If your brakes are not in good working condition, there were probably signs that led up to that problem. If you aren't sure what signs to watch out for, read on for some helpful information to use as a guide to know when your brakes need to be replaced.

Your Brakes Are Squealing

If your brakes are squealing, this is a sign that your brakes are going bad. The squealing is an indication that your brakes are beginning to wear out and you should be paying attention to this sound. If you hear squealing of any kind while driving, you need to take your vehicle in for inspection and repairs as needed. If your brakes squeal, it's usually the first sign that your brake pads have begun to wear out. You can still stop, but it may take a little longer to do so, and stopping in an emergency situation may be difficult.

Your Brakes Are Grinding

If your brakes are grinding in any way, it can also be a sign that your brakes are going bad. This usually indicates that your brake pads have already worn out and that you are wearing out the rotors of your braking system. Wearing out the brake pads are one thing, but wearing out the rotors can be very costly to have to replace in addition to the brake pads. If your brakes are grinding when you attempt to stop, or when you attempt to slowly turn your vehicle to one side or the other, it may be a sign that your rotors are worn out and need to be replaced.

You Are Pressing Hard On The Brake Pedal To Stop

If you have to press your foot down hard to stop your vehicle, or you feel like you are pressing the pedal into the floorboard in order to get your vehicle to stop, it may be a sign that your brakes are going bad. If you have to press harder in order to stop, it's a sure sign of a brake concern and you should take your vehicle in for service.

If your brakes are showing any of these signs, you need to take your vehicle in for service to ensure your vehicle is safe for driving. Contact a local brake service to learn more.
